7 New Year’s Resolutions for University Students

7 New Year’s Resolutions for University Students

Every New Year, most people set out to improve one or more aspects of their life with resolutions. Unfortunately, we often tend to fall off the wagon early in the year. The problem tends to be that our resolutions are too ambitious. This is especially true for university students, who are already under a great deal of pressure. If you’re enrolled in classes, you can make your resolutions for 2020 more manageable by setting realistic goals.

While every student is different, here are some popular resolutions to consider while attending university.

1. Hit the Gym

If you currently never go to the gym, a resolution to go just once or twice a week can make a big difference. You’re far more likely to succeed than if you decide that you need to be going every day. If, however, you’ve managed to work out frequently this year, your resolution could simply be to keep up with this schedule. You can always step up the intensity some days if you feel you need more.

2. Drink Water

Stop reaching for the soda or downing coffees all day and get yourself a glass of water. All this resolution requires is that you swap out some of your drinks for water throughout the day. Keep it, and both your health and your finances will benefit.

3. Explore Your Town or City

Whether you’re a freshman or you’ve been at university for a while now, there are always new things to discover in your town or city. Walk a different route, enter a store you’ve neglected up until now, or try out a new restaurant with friends. The last thing you want is for your university years to be over, only for you to realize that you never really knew the place where you lived.

4. Read More Books

Set a (reasonable) target for the number of books you want to read this year. It may seem like you’re always reading for your studies, but reading for pleasure is completely different. Whether you like novels, autobiographies, or self-help books, reading is valuable for expanding your mind and teaching you new things. You can also consider audiobooks to pass the time while you’re walking to class or working out.

5. Schedule Daily Breaks

Plan to take about 20 minutes out of your day just to chill. Use this time to meditate, do some stretches, listen to a podcast, or for anything else that will be healthy for your body and refresh your mind.

6. Meet Someone New

Actively plan how you can meet someone new, whether once a month or even once a week. Attend different social events, strike up conversations with people in your class, or talk to friends of friends at parties.

7. Find Better Student Housing

When you’re comfortable at home, you’ll find it much easier to stay positive and keep up with your resolutions. This is particularly true if you move off campus. For instance, you’ll have your own space where you can focus better and gain more kitchen space to prepare healthy meals.

All you need to do to complete this resolution is to find a better room for rent. Waterloo students are fortunate to have King St. Towers. It’s just as convenient as staying on campus, but you have the freedom of living in your own apartment. You can share your suite with friends, or take advantage of the roommate matching service to find like-minded people who will help keep you on track towards meeting your goals.

Happy New Year!
